Danger Will Robinson! An Unexpected House Hunting Hazard!

If you're an avid camper or otherwise frequent the woods, then you're probably well aware of this hazard!

Our county has quite a bit of rural landscape left, and for those prospective buyers venturing out of the
subdivisions and suburbia, there's a hidden hazard.  You won't know it gotten you immediately, but hours later when
you break out into a rash, you'll know what happened!

It's called poison ivy and it comes in various forms.  Attached is a photo we took this afternoon at one of our listings.
The three leafed plant is the one you need to watch out for.  If you want to see more pictures, visit

Poison IvyOur experience is that poison ivy is most prevalent in its ground form along a tree line.  It seems to thrive in the partly sunny areas!

Poison ivy, along with poison oak and poison sumac can give you a pretty serious, itchy rash.  The plant leaves have an
oil that causes a reaction on the skin to those allergic to the plants.  You can get the oil by direct contact with the plants (open toed
shoes and sandals are probably not advisable!), or by contacting objects that have been in direct contact (shoes, pets, shovels, etc.).

Once you've been in contact with the plants, try to remove the oils.  A past client of ours highly recommends Tech-nu.  It's a liquid soap
that removes the oil from your skin and we've had good luck with that.  Calydryl seems to help with the itching, although you may want to get the clear version so you don't have pink blotches when you go to work the next day!  If in doubt, consult your physician.  We didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn last night!

If you need help finding your home in the country, please call The Liz Spear Team!  We'll keep you away from the itchy stuff, and help you avoid the other hazards of buying a home!

Take care,
Bill & Liz
