Paying It Forward: Registering for Bone Marrow Donation
If you read us regularly, you know Bill is a regular blood donor with Hoxworth Blood Centers. His day job with Johnson & Johnson is with a company that takes it's civic responsibilities VERY seriously, with blood donation, United Way campaigns and extensive community projects.
Last week, they added a new program to support: Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation. Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation is a national bone marrow registry, with currently over 175,000 potential bone marrow donors identified and available for matching! Bone marrow donations allow people with diseases like leukemia to be CURED! Wouldn't you like to help save a life??
The process is fairly simple. You need to be between 18 & 60 years of age to volunteer. After some preliminary paperwork, four cotton swabs are used on the inside of your cheek to provide tissue samples for typing. The samples are sent off for typing and entered into the registry.
If you ever match a person in need, you will be contacted to continue the process. The transplant center will need a blood sample for further review to determine eligibility. If you clear the blood test, further physical testing may be requested to make sure you are fully healthy (keeping in mind people in need of stem cell or bone marrow donations have compromised health).
If you continue through the process, the transplant center will determine if they need stems cells taken via apheresis (a similar manner to regular blood donation), or if they need a bone marrow donation.
Bone marrow donations are taken with a needle through the back of the hip with anesethic applied. No cutting, no stitches. Typically outpatient, in that morning, home that afternoon. The donation process may require travel to one of the skilled centers that handle bone marrow removal and transplant procedures.
The odds are remote that you'll ever actually be called to donate, or make it through the entire screening process. You always have the right to decline to donate or remove yourself from the program.
