Paying It Forward: Here Comes The Judge!
As you know, I'm an engineer by day, REALTOR® by night and weekend...and vacation days (but that's another story!).
The warning signs start early that you've got a potential engineer on your hands!
The taking things apart, the voracious reading appetite, interests all over the place...building kites and model rockets, reading Sherlock Holmes entire series.
I suppose with the advent of computers, the warning signs have probably changed a bit...but trust me, if you're the parent of a future engineer, you KNOW! :)
And one other thing that's a dead give away?
Science Fairs! While the "popular" people were off doing their thing, the pocket protector crowd...the chess club wizs and the math & science aficionados....we were off running experiments and analysis. Making big plywood trifold displays with hand made charts, graphs and pictures...gunning for that ribbon that got us from our school level, to county, to state, and for a select few...the big time at nationals!
So I tried to make a homemade wind tunnel with smoke lines powered by a vacuum cleaner...a good idea that NEVER worked....I learned what made pepper hot and extracted the compounds another year, did a study on catalysts.... I was geeking out and enjoying every minute of it. And yes, I got to go to State a couple of times!
So flash forward 30 years, and last night I'm reading the paper and there's a little notice on the front page of the Hometown section. They need JUDGES for the Mason Middle School district science fair on February 3rd! Looking for people with a background in science, engineering or computers! Hey, that sounds just like someone I know :)
So fire off an email to the listed address volunteering, and by 6:30 this morning, confirmation received, I'm a judge :)
I'm looking forward to seeing what today's generation has for projects! With the advance of technology and the Internet access the kids have now, I'm betting it blows the doors off the stuff we did as kids!
A quote from our friend in North Carolina: "I do not share my stories of paying it forward for recognition. I share them so that others might be inspired to do what they can, when they can, where they can. No more, no less." Tish Lloyd, North Carolina REALTOR®
