Paying It Forward: Spay/Neuter the Whole Kitty Family!
We've mentioned before that we've been "found" by another family of feral kitties a couple of months ago. Now the Spear Family Cat Shelter aka as "The Garage" is already at capacity, so there's no way to add more cats without some major catfights....literally.
So the plan was to trap, neuter and release with the assistance of Ohio Alleycat Resource off of Red Bank Road in Madisonville. O.A.R. basically has one primary mission, and that's the Spay/Neuter part of T.N.R. (Trap,Neuter,Release) programs, and via volunteers, grants and donations they make it financially achievable for people.
It took us two trips to get all the kitties through O.A.R.'s "fixing" program. Mom (BeBe) and the three kittens (Cleo, Copy & Paste) went in round 1. $105 got them all spayed, rabies vaccine, distemper vaccine, worm, flea & tick treatments too. Anyone who's taken a pet to a regular vet knows you'd drop much more than that for just ONE cat, much less four!
It took two more weeks before we trapped Dad Cat ...aka B.P. short for a Sopranos character, just think about it, you'll get it! :) Another $35 and he had the complete treatment! Pick up the next day, opened the trap cage and he was off like a bolt! We've seen him around a couple of times in the last week, but for some reason he seems a bit wary....
Bebe hangs around in the back yard/deck area. We keep food and water out for her and she seems getting closer to being somewhat socialized. Doesn't automatically run under the deck and every now and then she lets Liz touch her briefly.
Cleo, Copy & Paste are enjoying life indoors as we socialize them, and they are pretty friendly! We have a very large dog kennel crate that we keep them in at night, then turn them loose in the master suite during the day. No interaction with the other cats, although Bunny El Chihuahua does like to come in and say hello....although we think she's mainly motivated by snacking on any cat kibble that escapes from the kennel crate!
We're hopeful that O.A.R. will be able to help us find permanent homes for the three kittens. But if you're local and can provide a good home to a kitten or two or three, reach out to us! As you know, they're already spayed and have their shots! :)
A quote from our friend in North Carolina that captures the spirit and intent of these posts:
"I do not share my stories of paying it forward for recognition. I share them so that others might be inspired to do what they can, when they can, where they can. No more, no less." Tish Lloyd, North Carolina REALTOR®
