Paying It Forward: Standing In the Checkout Line

grocery cartsPaying It Forward:  Standing In the Checkout Line

We tend to do most of our grocery shopping in frequent, small trips.  Mostly at one of our two local Krogers.  The Kings Mill Kroger on SR741 is pretty convenient when coming home from the day job, and with the Redbox for DVD rentals, sometimes gives us a two for one reason to shop there!

This week I stopped by to pick up a few necessities for the night's dinner, and was in the express line.  I couldn't help but notice the couple in front of me, I'd have to assume the lady in front of me was undergoing chemo, so maybe that little detail had me paying a little more attention than I normally would while standing in line.

I overheard the cashier ask if they had a Kroger Plus card?  Now like many grocery stores, Kroger has a customer loyalty card (it's free, but understand you trade away your shopping habits for the discounts), and if you DON'T have the card, you don't get the sales prices or special offers in the mail.  Now as circumstances would have it, the couple in front of me was from Michigan and didn't have a Kroger Plus card to get the discounts.

Now we've encountered the same thing when we've been out of state shopping at a different grocery store chain.  It's a one time visit most likely, no point in carrying around a Food Lion or Piggly Wiggly shoppers card is there?  In most cases the store cashier either has one they swipe, or someone in line has helped us out and loaned us theirs!

So here's an obvious Pay It Forward (literally) opportunity for us!  So offered them the swipe of our Kroger card, and of course they were happy to get the discount!  They save some dollars, and we get the opportunity to Pay It Forward.  Truly a win-win!

A quote from our friend in North Carolina that captures the spirit and intent of these posts:
"I do not share my stories of paying it forward for recognition. I share them so that others might be inspired to do what they can, when they can, where they can. No more, no less." Tish Lloyd, North Carolina REALTOR®
