Sometimes You Just Need To Sleep On It!
News report after news report makes it clear that most of us don't get near the amount of sleep that we should, and is it any wonder? I've got a blinking red light on my cell phone (which is also my alarm clock), blue glowing lights from a router, and more than a few things to do that won't get done any given day because there's just not enough time to do it all!
Last night was another of those days. Often by late Friday the double workweek has caught up with me, and a little down time is in order. But the tech gremlins had other plans!! Started to print the information for Sunday's showings, worked through the homes and went into the other room to pick up the printouts. Nothing there. Hmphh?? Print queue shows 9 docs in queue, but nothing is printing. Start troubleshooting, all the usual. Reboot the printer AND the laptop. Nada. Try from another laptop (it works there). Reboot the wireless modem, reinstall the printer on the laptop that won't work. Replace drivers, reinstall the network port, nothing. Hours roll by and I'm stumped. Will I need to call the copier tech in on Monday? Finally past 11 I'm just toast, maybe the gremlins will leave after midnight?
A night's sleep, get up this morning and within 10 minutes figure it out. A real Homer Simpson "D'oh!!" moment. We installed a new wireless router about a week ago, and this one is dual band (a channel for us, and a channel for guests so they can surf the net, but otherwise limited access). Care to guess which channel the laptop had grabbed after a reboot yesterday? Yeah, the GUEST channel that doesn't allow access to the printer! Switch connection and printing problem solved!
Now often in real estate we run into issues that at first may seem overwhelming or unsolvable. Sellers want something, buyers want something, neither side wants to give. Or maybe it's just anxiety. "Yes, that IS a big loan you're about to sign up for!" And in some cases, just like my tech problem yesterday, the best thing that can be done is to sleep on it. Let the emotion leave the situation. Recharge the brain matter. Maybe let the subconscious work on the problem and when you wake up bright and shiny the next morning that "thing" that was overwhelming just the day before will now be the little molehill it deserves to be instead of K-2!
Part of our role as your trusted real estate sherpas is to help you stay on track to your real estate goal. To keep those moments of anxiety short, to provide clarity on the big picture. And sometimes our advice is "Sleep on it, and we'll talk tomorrow". A new day may just bring a new way of thinking!
