Don't Doubt The Power Of Facebook & Social Media!
Although we might appear to be blogging machines, we'd still consider ourselves relative newbies in the social media sphere. We do post to our blogs regularly & we've got the framework of a Wordpress website/blog that we need to get fully up in running this fall.
We Tweet at a minor level, and we've had some level of Facebook involvement, first with my page, then last week we finally launched Liz's personal page and last night (FINALLY!!!) a fan page for Warren County Real Estate. There's still plenty of work to be done, and lots to learn, but we've got the right teachers here on Active Rain!
But yesterday and today we've gotten a sample of just how effective Facebook can be at pulling together a group and how quickly it can start to grow.
Most of you aren't aware, but Liz's brother John is a brain tumor survivor from three years ago. A glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) was removed at the time, and he was fortunate, the tumor was basically encapsulated and not tentacled. Coupled with chemo and surgery, the tumor was eradicated. Yes he needed physical therapy to relearn many things the rest of us take for granted, but he got the opportunity to continue to be a husband and a father to his four children. We're all thankful for that.
As part of his follow up care John has regular MRIs. Recently he had a "spot" on his scan. Nothing definitive, but enough to cause some concern. Then Labor Day weekend John has a seizure. A trip to the ER, another MRI and that spot had grown. More consultations and the decision was made for the Johns Hopkins surgery team to operate at 7:30 tomorrow morning. Initial prognosis is good, in the same spot as before, "easily" accessible, if you can ever consider brain surgery easy. We're hopeful that this is just scar tissue or some type of necrotic tissue causing the MRI illumination, and tomorrow will tell the tale for sure.
But back to social media, last night we created a Facebook Group, John Stepp Prayer/Support Group from the limited number of people that we have on Liz's Facebook page. And then within minutes, the posts started rolling in. People that don't know John from anyone, but know us from blogging we're adding their prayers and support for John. And then people we don't know at all started joining the group, and adding others. And the support and well wishes continued to roll in today.
For those convinced that the entire world has gone selfish, and is only me, me, me....well we'd like to make a counterargument that people aren't selfish, that they WILL think about others, act in their behalf, share in the blessings that God has given us.
So even if Facebook NEVER provides us a single real estate client, it has proven it's worth to us in the last 24 hours! Liz is on her way to Maryland right now to join her family to provide whatever personal support she can. We all pray for guidance for the surgery team and total healing for John. We appreciate the support from everyone, and you're of course quite welcome to add yourself to John's support group page if you're not already there!
Thankfully yours,
Bill of BLiz & Liz
