Solving The Problem of How to Use Our Kodak Videocam While Driving!
Cynthia Larsen posed the question the other day as to how to use her portable camera and record while driving. Here's her solution and based on THIS we'd say it worked pretty well!
But you can't put an engineer on a problem like that and just expect him to not come up with another solution.... so here goes:
We have a Tom Tom GPS we haven't used in a couple of years. We'd also bought a Nav-Mat at Target or Wally World for about $15 or $20 to mount the GPS to rather than the windshield. It has a non-skid bottom and a weighted ring around the edge that enables it to not slide around the dash, and a solid plastic sheet on the inside that the GPS mounting bracket suction cup sticks to.
Combine the GPS mount, the Nav-Mat, and Cynthia's rubber band and you've got a stable base, and even better, thanks to the pivoting GPS bracket, you can angle or tilt the camera as you need to alter your viewing angle (obviously NOT recommended while driving!). The end solution looks like this:
If you have the components or can get them, this should work for any of the Flipcam or Kodak portable style cameras. We trialed it this morning and it worked well...sorry, no sample vids for public consumption yet, but we'll have some before much longer! With the 8 GB video card we installed and set on 720p, we could record about 2 hours and pull out whatever we need from the tour!
Time to go do some driving :)
