Take Me Out To The Reds Ballgame!
Every now and then we all need a break. A reprieve from the rat race. Recharge, get together with some friends and just take advantage of the opportunities that living in the Cincinnati metro area offers. And it offers plenty! Because while Warren County offers no shortage of great things to do, some things you just have to head to the Big City!
And Saturday afternoon/evening was just one of those opportunities, out with some of my friends of a couple of decades. We've worked together building surgical instruments, helped each other move, (I even helped one find their next home), bowled league and played volleyball together. We've all aged a bit, so our activities are a bit more sedate, like catching a Reds-Braves game! (or at least we tried to!).
Now I'll have to be upfront and admit the Reds are my SECOND favorite ball team. #1? By virtue of growing up in the South, I'm a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan! So for me this was a a no-lose proposition, one of my favorite teams was going to win (although I'm pretty skeptical EITHER team is making the playoffs at this point).
We arrived plenty early for the 7:10 p.m. planned first pitch. Parked over near the Bengals stadium and hoofed a few blocks over. Gates opened up a bit after 5 p.m. and there were plenty of people lined up to get in thanks to the 2015 All Star Game bobblehead giveaway to the first 25,000 fans. And it was quickly apparent plenty of people were JUST there for the giveaways. As we're walking in, they're already heading back to their cars with several of the bobbleheads in possession. Curious, we check ebay on our phones and they're being offered for $30 plus shipping/handling. Ahhh, no wonder so many folks were at the game!
As for the game itself, Great American Ballpark is a fantastic stadium! Great views of the Ohio River and over into Kentucky. We had seats on the very front row of the upper deck, just slightly up the first base line. Perfect views of the field, with maybe the only blind spot the extreme right field foul corner.
We settled in and chatted for a bit, then some rain. Back into the covered area. Back to our seats, wipe off the rain, settle in again. See one of our past real estate clients who is a Reds employee down on the field as part of a presentation! That's cool!
A bit later, a stadium wide warning, get back to the concourses, bad weather! Heavier rain, but no lightning. But great views watching the rain over the Ohio River bridges! We're checking the radar app on our phone and it's pretty nasty looking to the west. After an hour and a half of back and forth, it's after 8:30, the weather on the phone radar still looks grim, we decide to call it a night and hope for an official rainout and a chance to put those tickets to use another night.
Now Murphy of Murphy's Law fame made entrance just after we left. The rain didn't come back! Somehow that mess to the west steered clear. They threw out first pitch just a couple of minutes shy of a 2 hour delay, and they quickly played 9 innings, with both teams forgetting how to hit! Reds win 1-0!
I guess we'll just have to try again another day! But it was still great getting together with the guys!
