The Cap

Go Navy Beat Army!

Once upon a time there was a warship that sailed the oceans blue and I was fortunate enough to be part of that crew for a couple of years.  That ballcap above has been part of my life since 1989.  The two years that I served on the Taylor I was the Ordnance Officer, in charge of the portion of the crew that had all the fun "toys", the guns and missiles and all the equipment that went with them.

We fulfilled the "Join the Navy, see the world" pledge!  Visits to Puerto Rico and Guantanamo Bay Cuba for training exercises.  Sailing out and around to dodge Hurricane Hugo and being off Charleston's shore and seeing the devastation and waiting for the harbor channels to be cleared so we could come back home again.

A trip across the Atlantic, through the Straits of Gibraltar and then the Suez Canal and on to the Persian Gulf.  The surprise as Saddam invaded Kuwait while we were in Bahrain and the quick shift in priorities.  Guarding merchant ships and oil platforms and aircraft carriers until it was time to go back home.  We had a few days here and there making port calls during the six months we were gone, experiencing the differences in culture.

A few months after we returned home I left the Navy, although in some ways the Navy has never left me.

My cap has some frayed threads and sweat stains so it doesn't go out in public much, but 26 years later it's still serves its purpose, and gives me a reminder of things best done young, but at the same time lessons that serve me well to this day.  Lessons that help me personally and in my dual careers as an engineer and as a real estate agent.

In my 20s I had times where I was in charge of the ship's watch crew.  Two in the morning where everyone that could be asleep would be, the bow cutting through the water, the seas glistening, the sky so clear that you could see the Milky Way clearly and you felt like you could reach up and touch the full moon.  A ship worth hundreds of millions and even more importantly, hundreds of lives counting on us to make the right decisions while they slept.

I'm not trying to say buying or selling a home isn't a huge deal, but my Navy days give me a different perspective than most.  I'm not going to get overly excited no matter what happens.  My job for my clients is to assess the available information, take into account what can happen, what should happen, and provide my clients the best possible advice.  And when new information is available, reassess and react accordingly.

Being able to assess a situation is key to helping my clients understand the market conditions that impact them.  What price can we get?  How quickly?  What to do when things go sideways?  It's all part of my training and my life experiences, the full package my clients get when they hire me to help buy or sell a home!
