One No Closer To Yes

no to yesI don't know who was the first to say "We're one No closer to Yes", but I know the first time I heard it.  Years ago we had a home for sale and the first showing feedback wasn't going to lead to an offer.  Mrs. Seller responded with "we're one No closer to Yes.".

And that made total sense.  She was making lemonade.  The reality is in most cases, it isn't going to be the first showing that sells the home.  It CAN (and does) happen, but we have to be prepared to hear a lot of NO before we finally hear YES from a buyer.

So Mrs. Seller was determined to keep a positive mindset and not get worried because showing 1 (or 2 or 3 or...) didn't want to buy the home.  But she knew that with patience that YES was coming.

Now currently our local real estate market is REALLY in favor of the seller.  We put a very affordable ranch home in Lebanon on the market yesterday morning and before the end of the day, 4 out of 5 agents who showed the home had written an offer.  Our seller got to YES very quickly and we're under contract.  Unfortunately for 3 of those offers, what they got was "thanks for your offer, but NO.".  They're now one No closer to Yes.

And I can experience both sides of that coin within 24 hours.  Yesterday I submitted an offer for a pair of my buyers.  That home went multiple offers too. And while they liked the home, they didn't LOVE the home. The offer was fair, but not meant to be overwhelming.  So we're now one No closer to Yes :)

And the philosophy applies elsewhere.  I don't get every seller I want to hire me, nor every buyer I'd like to hire me.  I'm another No closer to Yes.  I learn where I can, adapt, and do what I can to increase my chances that next time, YES will be the answer.

We may not like hearing the word no, but we sure hear a lot of no anyway.

Hi Bill,
I think that applies in many areas of life!  When I was single, there were many "frogs" that passed through my life.  So I guess you could say, with each one, I was one frog closer to my Prince Charming.  And, it worked.  The frogs were the "no", of course.

I had a Broker that would say for each phone call...Another $75.  Even if the call did not pan out but that is amount each call was worth to him

That's a great way to look at every NO we get.   When it comes to agent activities that involve any form of cold calling (FSBO's, expireds and withdrawns) I often put it this way--if you don't pick up the phone or door knock, you have assumed the answer is no.  Might as well call or knock because you might just be wrong.
