When you're buying a home you know there are certain expenses to expect:
Real estate taxes
And of course there are other expenses you know to expect to hit if you live in a home long enough:
General maintenance such as exterior painting
Furnace/AC and water heater
But did you think about some of the other hidden costs of your home purchase choice?
And some of those hidden costs aren't in dollars, but in time.
How long will it take to commute to work?
The lawn. Are you going to hire out someone to mow, or do it yourself?
And here's one from personal experience, gardening.
I'd be understating if I described our flower garden as "extensive". We didn't start with much when we bought the home, but over two decades later much has changed.
For instance we have 50+ azaleas lining the majority of the treeline around our front and side yards. Orange, white, yellow, pink and fuschia blooms highlight our spring. And skipping the expense of the purchase of those plants, there are expenses with maiyntaining just those flowers. They need fertilizer annually, and that's a few bags. And peat moss. LOTS of peat moss. Roughly 40 bales. And time, LOTS of time weeding, fertilizer and spreading that peat moss. So just that portion of our garden costs approximately $500 annually.
And the rest of our garden? Again, less skip the costs of the flowers themselves, but our bill at the nursery added up as we established our garden. But a significant annual expense? Mulch. And not just a little mulch. If I'm doing it myself, it's about 3 tall pallets of bagged mulch. Yes, bulk mulch might be cheaper, but there's that time thing. Two jobs means I typically don't have an abundance of time to spend in the garden, so I need to be able to piecemeal that work, thus the preference for bagged mulch.
Now that's just one example of how there can be hidden costs with a home. Someday we'll sell our home, and the next buyers inherit the flower garden. Will they realize what they're getting? We hope so!
