It's just pocket change.
Leftovers from an iced tea purchase or a quick snack. Tossed into the car's center console or dropped in a coat pocket. It doesn't seem like much individually. But move it to our change jar and after a year that jar gets pretty heavy. When that happens I haul it to a Coinstar at a local Kroger and load up the machine and listen to ka-ching ka-ching ka-ching sounds for about 10 minutes until all the change is dumped and counted. Out comes an Amazon e-gift receipt and no deductions by Coinstar for the counting. Today's haul $268.98. That's going to pay for quite a few cases of cat food :)
So obviously, pocket change can add up!
Now when you're buying a home what you consider pocket change and what I consider pocket change might be different, but the bottom line is a home purchase is just more than contracted sale price and those "pocket change" expenses for after you're the owner can add up to significant expenses.
- How much are utility bills?
- How much is homeowner's insurance?
- How much are taxes?
- How much HOA fees?
- What work must be done NOW? What can be deferred?
- How soon are the major mechanicals going to need replaced? The roof?
- Is there extensive landscaping that will be maintained?
A hot tub? Pool? Both come with some extra expenses.
Get the picture? There is much to be considered in the overall big picture. The better a home buyer understands these factors, the less likely that some "pocket change" line item will turn into a Godzilla expense later.
